2B Baseball: Rainier Takes Advantage of Walks to Down Winlock

WINLOCK — A few too many free bases came back to haunt Winlock here Friday afternoon in a 12-2 nonleague baseball loss to Rainier.

The Cardinals issued nine bases via walk or hit batter, and surrendered 9 runs in the top of the fifth inning to help the Mountaineers end the game early.

“The defense played pretty well, and on offense we were putting the ball in play,” Winlock coach Scott Weinert said. “But we had a little trouble on the mound tonight.”

Winlock trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth inning, and struck out only once in 23 plate appearances. Chase Miller went 1 for 1 with a stolen base, Wyatt Dean was 1 for 2 with a stolen base, and Jake Anderson and Brady Steveson were each 1 for 3.

The team’s two errors in the field, Weinert added, were also an improvement.

Winlock (0-11, 0-10 league) will host Morton-White Pass in a Central 2B League doubleheader on Monday.

Loggers Beat MWP in Walkoff Fashion

ONALASKA — The Loggers picked up their first Central 2B League baseball win of the year here Friday in a dramatic way, beating Morton-White Pass 9-8 with a clutch sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

Down 8-7 to start the final half-inning, Zach Caldwell started things off with a single and moved to second when the ball was misplayed. A bunt attempt went awry, but Caldwell moved to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Trulson then hit a ground ball to shortstop to score Caldwell, and beat out the throw to first base, tying the game at 8-8. A walk, a balk and an intentional walk with no outs then loaded the bases for freshman Kolton Covey who, in his first varsity start, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Trulson and end the game.

Trulson, a freshman, added a solo home run in the second inning, and Roberto Patraca hit a 3-run homer to left in the fifth inning that tied the game at 7-7.

Trace Lawrence and Caldwell each had two hits for Onalaska, and Michael Duran hit a 2-out RBI single.

Cody Hamrick went all seven innings for the Loggers, allowing six hits and striking out 11 with eight errors committed behind him.

“He threw really well,” Logger coach Kyle Smaciarz said. “He had that one moment in the middle of the game where he hit a little bit of a wall, but he fought out of that inning. He kept his composure, and as he got on, in the later part of the game, he got better and better.”

Braiden Elledge hit a 3-run double for MWP in the fourth inning. James Sword and Kaleb Rashoff each hit RBI singles, and Gavin Higdon hit a double.

Onalaska (2-9, 1-9 league) will play at Napavine on Monday. Morton-White Pass (2-9, 2-8 league) will play at Winlock on Monday.
