ADNA — The Pirates used an 8-run third inning to make quick work of Toledo here Monday night in a nonleague softball contest.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini had 11 strikeouts in four innings, while complementing her own work by going 2 for 2 from the plate.

“She started with a couple walks, but once she settled down she pretty much mowed them down,” Pirate coach Mike Raschke said. “I don’t think she threw more than three balls (per batter) in the next three innings.

    “Her adrenaline was definitely running.”

Taylor Hoke brought in four RBIs on two hits for the Pirates, who tallied 11 on the day. Jordan Sandrini and Jordan Zurfluh had two hits apiece, as well, and Kenzie Lee’s two-RBI double assisted in the third inning of scoring.

Toledo had four errors in the contest, and just three hits. They scored runs in the first and fifth innings.

“Overall, I was pretty pleased with our defense and our hitting,” Raschke said.

Raschke also commended the play of freshman catcher Emma Brattain, who has the assignment of replacing all-league catcher Juana Lara from the Pirates’ 2009 State 2B title team.

“She did a great job catching for Jessika-Jo,” Raschke said of Brattain. “She did a very good job of working hard in the offseason to make this work.”

Adna (1-0) opens Central 2B League play with a doubleheader next Friday at Napavine, while Toledo (0-1) hosts Toutle Lake Wednesday.
