1A Girls: Lady Loggers Truck Through Toledo

Posted

ONALASKA — Toledo had played a couple games already this season, and Onalaska hadn’t, so Logger coach Bill Barnes said he was curious to see how his team would do in an SWW 1A League Evergreen Division doubleheader here Thursday.

“I thought, ‘We’ll see what we need to work on,’” he said.

It doesn’t appear to be much thus far, after an error-free first game, 33 total hits, and some quality playing time for the subs in a pair of comfortable wins: 10-0 and 22-4.

“For a first outing, I was really pleased,” Barnes said. “I felt like the girls definitely came to play and I was happy to see that.”

Sarah Barnes had 15 strikeouts in Game 1 and five hits on the day, Hailey Givens had seven hits, and Regan Givens tallied five hits and as many RBIs.

In Game 1, Onalaska jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.

“We drew first blood,” Barnes said. “And our defense was solid for our first game out.”

Freshman Autumn Durand went 3 for 4 in Game 2, where the Loggers tallied 22 of their hits, and went through the lineup twice in the sixth inning.

“It was almost a competition amongst themselves,” Barnes said, laughing.

Onalaska (2-0) is at Tenino Thursday for a doubleheader at 3 p.m., and Barnes is still curious about finding his team’s flaws, because they were few on Thursday.

“We definitely have some things you have to work on,” he said.

Warriors Nab Two Home Wins Over Forks

ROCHESTER — The Warriors opened SWW 1A League Evergreen Division play with a pair of wins here Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader with Forks by 9-2 and 11-9 scores.

“The girls were all heart,” Rochester coach Shannon Stine said. “They just stuck with it and played a nice, level-headed game.”

Kami McElwain held Forks to just four hits in the 9-2 first game, striking out five.

“She was really strong,” Stine said. “She really controlled the ball well and did a good job of keeping charge out there.”

Rayne Dorsch went 3 for 4 for the Warriors, Samantha Johnson drove in 3 runs with a double in the sixth inning, and Janice Knutz hit a 3-run homer in the first inning and finished with 4 RBIs.

In the second game, Kendra Glacken took over on the mound and picked up 12 strikeouts. Knutz went 3-3 with an RBI and Ashley Pearson was 2-4.

Stine cited her team for aggressive baserunning and smart hitting in the 11-9 Game 2 win.

Rochester (2-1) is at Morton on Tuesday.

Beavers Split With Rainier

RAINIER — Tenino split a doubleheader with the host Mountaineers here Thursday night in SWW 1A League Evergreen Division softball, winning its first game in six innings before falling big in the second.

In Game 1, the Beavers tallied 16 hits en route to a 16-6 win. They also had five errors, however, and Rainier could only muster three hits of its own.

“It was the first game for us of the season and, in light of that, I was pleased with the way we swung the bats,” Tenino coach Wanda Blanksma said. “We put the ball in play and made something happen for us.

“Five errors is too many, it looked like a typical first night out.”

Tiffany O’Brien got two hits in each game, and Megan Crawford went 3 for 5 with a two-RBI double in Game 1. Erika Vance, Cassie Vance, and Dani Wall also had two hits apiece in that game.

In Game 2, Tenino captured a 6-5 lead after the first inning, but that’s when Blanksma said the defense disappeared.

“We were just sitting back,” she said. “We just weren’t coming in and getting the ball.”

Rainier had 10 hits to Tenino’s seven.

Tenino (1-1) hosts River Ridge today at 4:30 p.m.
