SOUTH BEND — White Pass kicked off its track season in style here Thursday, with the Panther girls winning the team portion of the meet.

Pe Ell’s boys and girls teams both came in fourth place, with freshmen Sami-Jo Robinson and Alissa Brooks-Johnson and sophomore Emilly Denney combining for six firsts.

The Panther boys were just behind South Bend, 166.5 to 149, while Mary M. Knight was a distant third — out of seven teams — with 44 points.

On the girls side Nicole Anderson was “outstanding,” according to Panther coach John Karas, winning the 800-meters, 1600 and 3200 and running on the second-place 4x400 relay team.

The Panther 4x200 relay team also came in first, and Therese Tran won the shot put (30-3) and took second in the discus (79-3).

For the boys, Evan Martin recorded a 6-foot-3 mark in the high jump — two inches higher than he jumped at the state meet last spring — to win the event by a few inches. Freshman Spencer Seymer won the 100 in 11.9 and took second in the 200, and ran on the winning 4x400 relay team.

Brad Fenbert took second in the 400 and 1600 and ran on the 4x400 relay squad, and Matt Green and Jeff Fenbert came in first and second, respectively, in the 300 hurdles.

For the Pe Ell boys, Joey Vetter came in second in the 100 and third in the high jump.

On the girls side Brooks-Johnson won the 200 and long jump and came in second in the 100 hurdles. Robinson won the 100 hurdles and the high jump and came in second in the triple jump, while Denney won the discus and the javelin.

"We do have a real strong couple of freshmen there, that're going to do pretty well," Pe Ell coach Ron Dorothy said. "Overall, I think it was a real good meet for us, to get out and get the kinds out."

White Pass is at the Rainier Icebreaker meet on Saturday.

Bertucci Wins at North Beach

NORTH BEACH — Morton’s Stefana Bertucci won the 3200 meters with a time of 13 minutes, 22 seconds here Thursday at the North Beach Invitational.

“We had an excellent first three weeks of practice and I expect good things out of Stefana this season,” said Morton track coach Nathan Ross. “We have a small team this year, but we have quality athletes so it’s good time to be a coach at Morton High School.”

The Huskies will compete at a Central 2B League meet at Toutle Lake on Thursday.
