The Indians picked up an easy win in the first round of the District IV 1A Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday night in Chehalis, topping Columbia (White Salmon) 60-36 to advance to the second round.

Tiffany Tornow hit 4 of 6 from long range in the first few minutes, and Toledo led 18-8 after one quarter.

“It was a good experience for the younger kids,” Toledo coach Mandie Olson said. “It was their first district game, and everyone got plenty of playing time.”

Tornow finished with 20 points, and Brianna Votaw had 16 points and four steals. Brittany Hope added 10 points, and Haley Hellem had four assists for the winners.

The win puts Toledo (20-1) and Onalaska in a semifinal matchup Saturday night in Chehalis, The Indians won both of the teams’ regular-season matchups.

Ony Rolls Past Ilwaco

KELSO — The Loggers jumped out to a 19-7 after the first 8 minutes and never looked back.

Onalaska rolled to a 69-51 win over Ilwaco in its District IV 1A Girls Tournament opener here Thursday night.

“It was one of the better halves of basketball we have played all year,” said Onalaska coach Doug Ashmore, whose team held a 36-18 lead at intermission.

The Fisherman fought back but the damage had already been done as three Loggers finished in double figures with Samantha Gordon leading the way with 15 points. The senior also had seven rebounds and four steals on the night.

When Kalie Ritchey and Hailey Givens got in foul trouble, the Ony bench picked them up as the Logger subs outscored the Ilwaco reserves 18-2 for the game.

Freshman Bailee Neilson came off the pine to score 12 points for Onalaska.

“Neilson played a great game,” said Ashmore. “She played a lot of quality minutes for us tonight.”

The Loggers forced Ilwaco into 34 turnovers on the night with Sarah Barnes leading the team with five steals. Barnes also scored 9 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Givens managed to play through foul trouble and finished with 14 points and Autumn Durand notched 9 points on the night.

Onalaska will play Toledo on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Chehalis. The Indians won both games earlier this season, but Ashmore hopes that their luck against Toledo will change in the near future.

“I know its hard to beat a team three times in a season,” said Ashmore. “We’ll see if we can work some magic and get after it.”

Wildcats Work Over Winlock

KELSO — Winlock and La Center were tied at 11 after one quarter of play here Thursday night, but a 40-point spree over the next two quarters by the Wildcats buried the Cardinals, 64-49, in a District IV 1A Girls Basketball Tournament opener here Thursday night.

“We played hard in the first quarter,” Cardinal coach Scott Ashmore said. “We hit some shots and passed the ball.

“The second quarter came around we started turning it over,” he added. “We didn’t rebound, and they hit shots. You can’t give a good team as many looks as we gave them.”

La Center hit 25 of 46 attempts form the field, and outrebounded Winlock 35-28. The Cardinals had as many attempts as the Wildcats, but only cashed in 13.

“It was the first district game for all of them,” Ashmore said. “So there was a lot of first game jitters.”

Julie Jacobo didn’t look like she had the first game jitters, accounting for 28 of the team’s points in the losing effort. She was the only player on her squad to score more than 6 points.

“She came out to play,” Ashmore said of his guard, who hit 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. “She buried her 3s. She was just tough.”

Winlock plays Castle Rock Saturday in a loser-out game, with the site (either Chehalis or Kelso) to be announced today.
