1A Boys: Toledo Makes Short Work of Rival Cardinals

    TOLEDO — The Indians jumped out to a 20-4 lead after one quarter of play against Winlock, which helped guide a comfortable 64-27 SWW 1A League Evergreen Division boys basketball win here Friday night.

    Ten of 11 Toledo players who hit the floor scored points, with Bryce Holmes leading the way with 10. Jesse Wallace had 8 points and 14 rebounds.

    “We came out and did real well,” Toledo coach Scott Merzoian said. “We wanted to come out and put pressure on them and we did that.

    “They have a young team, and we wanted to see if we could force them into turnovers,” he added, “so that we could get some easy looks at the hoop for us.”

    Bryson Coleman led the Cardinals with 8 points, followed by Enrique Hernandez and Danny Gray with 5 apiece.

    Toledo shot 19 of 41 from the field, while limiting Winlock (2-12, 2-6 league) to just 10 field goals. The Indians also stood out on the free throw line, netting 23 of 34 attempts.

    “It was a well-rounded team effort,” Merzoian said. “Everyone was focused. It was good to come in and take care of business when you’re at home.”

    Toledo (10-3, 7-1 league) hosts Montesano Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Warriors Roll Past Beavers

    TENINO — The Beavers came close to getting their first SWW 1A League Evergreen Division win of the season here Friday night against Rochester.

    Down 2 with under a minute left, a Tenino 3-pointer rattled out of the rim, and the Warriors extended their lead through the charity stripe en route to a 59-52 win.

    “We got down early again,” said Beaver coach Rod Enos, whose team was outscored 18-13 in the first frame. “We got down by 12 with about 4 minutes left in the first quarter and kind of hung around all game.



    “Finally in the fourth quarter we put the full court press on and got some steals and layups,” he added.

    Jared Burkhardt had a game-high 23 points for Rochester (7-7, 5-3 league), after scoring just 9 in the previous matchup between the teams.

    Tyler McLemore also chipped in with 14 in the winning effort, and Brandon Canales had 9.

    Darrin Love had a season-high 17 for the Beavers, followed by Jordan Howell and Josh Moss with 14 apiece.

    Tenino (1-11, 0-8 league) plays at Forks Tuesday.

Loggers Cruise by Bulldogs

    MONTESANO — Onalaska opened up an 18-4 first quarter lead against Montesano, and coasted to a 63-36 SWW 1A League Evergreen Division win here Friday night in boys basketball action.

    The Loggers were led by Dalton Ritchey with 15 points, Eddie Miles with 12, and Steven Nedved with 10.

    “It was just good defense,” Logger coach Dennis Bower said. “We put the game away early.

    “I thought our bench was strong again,” he added. “We did what we had to do to take care of business.”

    Onalaska (15-0, 8-0 league) hosts Rainier Tuesday at 7 p.m.
