Prep Boys Soccer: W.F. West Defeats United 2-0

TOLEDO — After the two teams battled to a tie last week, the Bearcats got the edge on United, downing the Toledo-Winlock boys 2-0 here on Thursday in United’s third game in as many days.

“They gave us a good battle,” W.F. West coach Tino Sanchez. “We just had to get ourselves together and get some breakthroughs.”

United had the edge in shots on goal, 12-8, and corner kicks but couldn’t get the offensive output they needed as Jesse Gonzalez played a great game in the net for the Bearcats, Sanchez said.

“We had a lot of good things in this game,” United coach Horst Malunat said. “We just couldn’t score but we don’t have any excuse, W.F. West did a good job.”

Liam Radtke got W.F. West on board in the 12th minute on an assists from Enrique Bautista. That’s how the game would stay until the 59th minute when Christian Moran scored on a breakaway goal.

Marco Leal, Jesus Morales and Drew Mann all played well for W.F. West, Sanchez added.

David Van Vleck played a solid game for United, Malunat said, and the team (2-2-1, 1-0 league) plays a 1A Trico League contest in La Center on Saturday.

W.F. West (2-2-1) will host Fort Vancouver on Tuesday.

Schaefer Scores Seven Goals in Tenino Win

TENINO — Marius Schaefer scored seven goals and the Beavers rolled Evergreen 2A/1A League foe Forks 8-2 here on Thursday as Tenino improved to 2-0 in league play.

“This kid is a very prolific scorer,” Tenino coach Kurt Brown said. “He finds the net well.”

Forks, which hasn’t had a program the previous two years, trailed 2-0 at the half before the Beavers exploded for six goals in the second half. Colton Malcom rounded out Tenino’s scoring in the 78th minute.

“I like the way we’ve started the season and once we get some players back that we’re missing we should have a stronger defense and keep the scored down against us,” Brown said. “The team as a whole has been working really well and playing at a good energy level.”

The Beavers’ JV has also been doing a good job serving as the short-handed Tenino squad’s subs during this stretch, Brown added.

The Beavers (2-1-1, 2-0 league) play at Hoquiam on Monday.

Bobcats Blank Warrior Booters

ROCHESTER — The Warriors shut Aberdeen out in the first half, but squandered opportunities helped the Bobcats get into their groove in a 5-0 Evergreen 2A/1A League boys soccer win here on Thursday.

Isaiah Contreras scored all three of his goals after the break for Aberdeen.

A handball violation proved costly after the Warriors, who had gone tit for tat with Aberdeen until the 35th minute, where Victor Junco scored on a penalty kick. Rochester was able to go into intermission with just a 1-0 deficit.

"I thought we played really good against them in the first half," Rochester coach Brian Ziese said. "We came right at them, but we kind of lost fire in the second half when the little things started to fall apart for us."

Contreras found his rhythm, scoring in quick succession in the 45th, 55th, and 60th minutes to notch a hat trick. Denis Calles-Membrano capped it off with another goal in the 63rd minute to round out the Bobcat scoring.

Ziese credited keeper Jose Maya with his efforts in the goal. Maya ended with 11 saves. The Warriors managed eight shots on goal, but couldn't connect with the back of the net.

"We had some chances and we missed them," Ziese said. "Eventually Aberdeen calmed down and got into their offense. They are a great team and they are definitely the team to beat."

Rochester (1-1 league, 1-2 overall) will host Centralia on Friday.
