1A Boys: Montesano Sneaks Past Toledo

TOLEDO — Neither team shot well in Tuesday night’s SWW 1A League Evergreen Division contest, but Montesano was efficient enough to get the 42-33 win over Toledo.

The Bulldogs shot 18 of 50 (36 percent) opposed to Toledo’s 14 of 45 (31.1 percent) while outscoring the hosts 22-14 in the first half.

“We got off to a slow start and never really played well the whole game,” said Toledo coach Scott Merzoian.

Shooting from the field wasn’t the only problem for the Indians. Toledo (10-5, 7-2) turned the ball over 27 times — 15 of which came in the first half — while also giving up 15 offensive rebounds (10 in the opening half).

“We didn’t do a very good job of finding guys and blocking them out,” said Merzoian. “We just didn’t get the job done tonight. You can’t give a team that many opportunities.”

The Indians cut the Montesano lead to 2 points with two minutes to play, but missed shots and turnovers led to Toledo having to foul as time winded down.

Montesano’s Sean McNeally scored a game-high 14 points and was 5 of 8 from the foul stripe down the stretch.

No Toledo player hit double figures, but Keefer Askin led the team with 8 points and Jesse Wallace pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and scored 4 points.

Toledo travels to Rainier on Friday for a boys-girls doubleheader, with the boys starting at 7:30 p.m.

Note: In other SWW 1A League Evergreen Division action Tuesday night, Forks beat Tenino 54-35. Details were unavailable.
