Softball: Knutz Homers, but Warriors Fall in Opener to Kalama

Posted

ROCHESTER — Janice Knutz had a big day at the plate, but Rochester didn’t have quite enough firepower to topple Kalama here Tuesday in nonleague softball action.

The Chinooks scored all of their runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings in the 14-5 win, which was Rochester’s season-opener.

“We’ve got some things to work on, and we did some things well,” Rochester assistant coach John Thompson said. “We’re young, and it’s early.”

Knutz knocked a home run to lead off the seventh inning and hit a double, and Rayne Dorsch had two hard-hit singles for the Warriors. Defensively, Thompson said Kendra Glacken played well at third base — including fielding a throw to pick off a runner at third base and end the sixth inning — and that freshman pitcher Kami McElwain looked good with seven strikeouts in her high school debut.

The Warriors (0-1) will host Forks in a doubleheader on Thursday in their SWW 1A League Evergreen Division opener.
