1A Baseball: Loggers Capture Win From Tenino

TENINO — Onalaska withheld a seventh-inning Tenino rally to capture its second SWW 1A League Evergreen Division win of the season, beating the Beavers 2-1 here Thursday.

The Loggers held tightly to a 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Beavers rallied and got runners on second and third with just one out as they threatened to knot the game at two.

Tenino courtesy runner Dakin Pollard took off from third base once the ball was hit, and Logger first baseman Brady Stanley fielded the grounder then gunned it to Cory Nutt at home who proceeded to stonewall a sliding Pollard at the plate for the second out of the final inning.

“That was a huge play by Brady,” said Onalaska coach John Hallead. “It wasn’t a force situation, so he had to go home with it and had a perfect throw.”

Onalaska earned the final out with a Dalton Ritchey strikeout to get its second win after starting the season 0-2.

Freshman Wyatt Anderson opened up the scoring for the Loggers in the second inning, when he plated Stanley with a single.

Moss knotted the game at one when he singled in Derek Mozzone, who reached base with a double in the previous at bat. Tenino’s only hits came back-to-back in the fourth inning.

“We didn’t really compete at the plate today,” said Tenino coach Jesse Elam. “Especially when our pitchers are giving us such a great performance.”

The Loggers produced two runs on just five hits against Tenino ace Josh Moss, who mowed down 11 Ony batters on the day. His balk with runners on first and third in the sixth inning, though, allowed the Loggers a 1-run advantage that withstood for the remainder of the game.

Tenino jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four innings in the nightcap of the twinbill, but Onalaska battled back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.

The second game was called after the completion of the seventh inning and will be replayed at a date yet to be determined.

Onalaska (2-2, 1-2) will host Mossyrock on April 5, while Tenino (2-3, 2-1) will travel to Steilacoom next Friday.
