2A Girls Tennis: Tumwater Edges Centralia Netters, 4-2

TUMWATER — Tumwater swept the singles play, and a tight win in the No. 3 doubles match gave the Thunderbirds a 4-2 win over Centralia here Monday in Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis action.

Tumwater’s Cara Cummings and Kristina Golden beat Centralia’s Mali Christian and Ryann Chamberlain, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 with a 10-6 tiebreaker win in the final set — a shorter third set than normal, as Tumwater’s facility has just five courts and the 10-point tiebreaker is used to save time, according to Tiger coach Deb Keahey.

“I think Mali and Ryann's strength is in their stamina and usually if they go three sets, they win,” Keahey said. “It was a little disappointing for them because the match was so close, and they had to finish the third set playing a super tiebreaker.”

Centralia’s Jaycee Foster and Hannah Jeffries won 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, and Sydney Creel and Hayden Blaser won a close 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 match at No. 2 doubles.

Centralia (6-3, 2-2 league) will play at Black Hills on Wednesday.
