OAKVILLE — After four quarters and two exhausting overtimes, the Acorns — down eight in the third extra frame — looked like they ran out of gas against Lake Quinault here Friday night in Pacific Coast 1B League Boys basketball action.

But Oakville rallied back to send the game to a fourth extra period, and won the 84-79 game — which coach Steve Reinitz referred to as a “battle of attrition” — as each team relied heavily upon its reserves throughout the eight quarters.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said of the duration of the game. “It was just two very, very equally matched ball clubs, and nobody gave up. We battled back and really controlled ourselves and played with a lot of intensity to finish it out.

“I think our kids wanted this game bad,” Reinitz added, “as it showed.”

Kodi Berentsen put in a game-high 33 points for the Acorns, and was in a scoring battle with the Elks’ Cameron Daniels, who fouled out in the third overtime with 29 points.

“When you look at what those two did to each other’s teams,” Reinitz said, “they just battled really hard in trying to get a victory.”

Oakville, too, had players fouled out in the extra frames, when Bobby Jones and reserve Owen Johnston chipped in with a combined, and crucial, 12 points.

“We had a couple starters foul out,” Reinitz said. “And a couple kids that came in and basically played a full basketball game.”

Other notables for Oakville were Tucker Reinitz (10 points), Rhyse Pettit (12), Ricky Sutterlict (9) and Brian Witt (8 points and 10 rebounds).

Oakville (7-4, 4-1 league) plays at North River tonight.

“I can’t praise whole team enough,” Reinitz said.

Acorn Girls Top Elks

OAKVILLE — Four Acorns hit double-digit scoring in Oakville’s 54-47 Pacific 1B League win over Lake Quinault here Friday night in girls basketball action.

Skylar Bracero led the way with 12 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Jordan Merriman, Tammy Klatush, and Jeanette Boyd, who each had 10.

“It was a really balanced effort on our part,” Acorn coach Tracy Bray said. “We had a hard time adjusting our defense for their outside shooters.”

Lake Quinault hit 11 of 27 from 3-point range to stay in the game, and had just 19 2-point field goal attempts.

“We just didn’t adjust very well to it,” Bray said. “Quite honestly their 3-point shooters aren’t on the line. They were shooting from NBA range.

“At first, it’s like, ‘If they want to shoot there let them,’” she added. “After they start making them, then you don’t want them shooting it.”

A fairly even scoring plain in the final three quarters, with just a 3-point difference between the teams, the Acorns’ 17-8 first quarter lead was vital in the win.

The Acorns improved to 7-3 overall, and 3-1 in league, with the victory.
