Toledo 10, Montesano 7

Toledo used a four-run sixth inning rally to hold on and upset Montesano 10-7 here Tuesday for its first win of the season.

“It’s been a while since we beat Montesano,” said Toledo coach Bill Waag. “I’m proud of the girls for coming out and staying in the game and putting some hits together.”

The Indians strung together four hits and walk in the sixth inning and Brianna Votaw cracked a two-run double to cap off the Indians’ sixth-frame rally.

“Brianna was a big force in creating some offense when we needed it,” said Waag of Votaw who finished with two doubles, a single and two RBIs. “Those runs gave us some breathing room to hold them in the seventh.”

Megan Herbert pitched a complete game for Toledo striking out seven and giving up seven runs on 11 hits.

“When we needed a strikeout or a big play she game through or the defense came through,” said Waag, whose team committed nary an error in the opening game.

Shannon Johanson finished the first game with three doubles and two RBIs, while Brittany Hope had two singles and an RBI.

Montesano 16, Toledo 1

Heading into the nightcap of the doubleheader Toledo was hoping to pull off a surprise sweep of the reigning two-time State 1A softball champions, but after the first inning it didn’t look very likely.

The Bulldogs got their groove back as the tallied 11 first-inning runs on nine hits. The Indians assisted Montesano’s cause by committing three errors in the first frame.

“It wasn’t a good start,” said Waag. “It was a little let down after our first win, but our kids stayed positive and kept battling.”

Montesano’s Devyn Baker held Toledo to just two hits in the four inning contest with Votaw and Herbert recording the only base knocks for the Indians.

Toledo’s next game won’t be until April 5 when they host Toutle Lake.
