WINLOCK — Pe Ell got the best of the host Cardinals, 16-9, in a slugfest between winless teams here Monday night in a nonleague baseball contest.

The Trojans rattled off 18 hits to Winlock’s 14, but the Cardinals’ six errors — five of which aided Pe Ell in a 9-run, sixth inning — proved to be the difference.

“We’re hitting the ball and scoring runs so far,” said Winlock coach Brian Demarest, “but we’re not able to keep the other team from scoring runs.

“All in all, I was happy with our hitting.”

Lerry Tolliver and Dylan Toepelt racked up three hits each for Pe Ell, while Daniel Duncan, Tyler Ratkie and Gabe Woodward each had two.

Matt Hoven was a perfect 3 for 3 for Winlock, and Nick Hoven, Dalton Sturza and Mike Raupp tallied two hits apiece.

The Cardinals had a 7-6 lead after three innings, before the Trojans went on to score 12 straight runs over three innings. Winlock countered with 2 runs in the seventh.

Demarest was impressed with Hoven’s senior leadership, but still hopes to find a solid pitching rotation as the year progresses.

“We’re going to have to end up finding some pitching somewhere,” he said.

Pe Ell (1-4, 0-2 league) travels to Lake Quinault Saturday, while Winlock (0-4, 0-2 league) hosts Rochester on Thursday.

Demarest said the Warriors will be quite the challenge.

“You go off tradition, they are traditionally pretty tough,” he said. “I think anyone we play in our league pretty tough this season.”

Yelm Edges Tenino, 12-11

TENINO — Yelm’s five-run fourth inning was too large a deficit for the Beavers to overcome as they fell 12-11 in nonleague baseball action here Monday afternoon.

Outside of the Tornadoes’ five-run rally in the fourth frame, the Tenino pitching cadre of Nick Leatherwood, Ben Peterson and Dustin Hammond kept 3A Yelm in check.

“Our pitchers did exactly what we asked them to do,” said Tenino coach Jesse Elam. “We were right with them, but that fourth inning killed us.”

Leatherwood started on the mound for the Beavers and went three innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

“Those 17 hits they had wasn’t indicative of how our guys threw today,” said Elam.

Hammond closed the game out for Tenino and gave up four runs and struck out two in his first varsity appearance on the mound.

“I’m happy with day overall,” said Elam. “You could see they had some pretty athletic guys and we were a little intimidated to start the day.”

If the Beavers were intimidated, they didn’t play like it as they used a five-run rally in the third frame to go up 7-3.

Devante Harris hit a two-run single to start things off in the third and Tenino scored all its runs in the third with two outs.

“That was nice for us,” said Elam. “We made their pitchers throw a lot of pitches and we were stood tough with two strikes on us.”

Josh Moss had an RBI single in the third inning that scored Derek Mozzone. Moss finished the day 2 for 4 with a double, while Tylor Cavin chipped in with an RBI single of his own the third frame.

Ryan Schlesser went 2 for 4 on the day with three RBIs, two of which came from a double in the fourth.

Tenino (2-2, 2-0 league) will host Onalaska on Thursday in a SWW 1A League Evergreen Division doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
