Softball: Toutle Lake Edges Toledo, 7-6, in Nonleague Action

TOUTLE — It took all seven innings but the Ducks edged Toledo by a run, 7-6, here Wednesday in nonleague softball action.

Toutle caught a break on an Indian overthrow to open the final frame and the runner eventually scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice two batters later.

The error was Toledo’s sixth — and most costly — of the afternoon.

“If we would have made the plays it would have been a different ball game,” said Toledo coach Bill Waag. “We haven’t been able to practice on our field and it’s showing right now.”

The Indians held a 3-2 advantage after the first inning, but the Ducks rallied back in the third for three runs to take a 5-2 lead into the fourth. Toledo tied things up in the sixth before the final-inning run for Toutle.

“I’m pleased with us putting the ball in play, but our defense just isn’t where it needs to be right now,” said Waag.

Brianna Votaw and Brittany Hope both finished with three hits and two RBIs. Votaw opened the game on the mound for Toledo pitching four innings and giving up eight hits and two walks.

Haley Hellem, Shannon Johanson and Megan Herbert all had two hits. Herbert closed out the game for the Indians pitching three innings giving up six hits and striking out two.

Toledo travels to Onalaska today for its first SWW 1A League Evergreen Division doubleheader of the season.
