2B Girls: Swayze Leads Mossyrock Past Pirates

    MOSSYROCK — The Vikings got a bit of revenge, along with a crucial Central 2B League win, over the Pirates here Tuesday night in girls basketball action.

    After losing by 15 in December, Mossyrock won 49-39 on their its home court to improve to 4-4 in league play. The Vikings took a 22-15 lead in to halftime then outscored Adna 27-24 in the late half.

    Claire Swayze scored a team-high 14 points and Jordan Nelson — who sprained her ankle earlier in the game — chipped in with 10.

    “Claire works hard for her points,” said Mossyrock coach Gale Bridges. “She is hard to stop when she gets a step (on her defender) and drives to the hoop.”

    Bridges noted that Samantha Snodgrass was big for the Viks down the stretch with all of her 6 points coming in the fourth quarter.

    “Samantha coming off the bench was a real big boost for us,” said Bridges.

    Jordan Zurfluh scored 15 points to lead Adna.

    The Vikings (7-9 overall) host Napavine on Thursday night at 7 p.m., while Adna (2-6 league, 6-9 overall) will host Pe Ell on the same night at the same time.

Tigers Hold Off Toutle to Stay Unbeaten in League

    NAPAVINE — The Tigers got a 36-34 Central 2B League win here Tuesday night against Toutle Lake.

    The game, though, wasn’t nearly as pretty as Napavine’s 9-0 league record.

    “We, obviously, struggled offensively,” said Tiger coach Shane Schutz, whose team shot a dismal 30 percent from the floor (14 of 46) in the win. “I thought Toutle did a very good job of keeping us in a half-court game. They played some great defense.”

    The Ducks were led by 15 points from Maddie Timm, and outrebounded Napavine 35-25.

    Napavine led 31-23 going into the final quarter, but Toutle closed the gap and had a chance to win late.

    “They had about four shots with 11 seconds to go,” Schutz said. “Ali (Brossard) pulled down a rebound with 2 seconds left, and the buzzer went off.



    “They had their chances, and we almost gave it away,” the coach added. “I was proud of our kids. We bent, but didn’t break.”

    Brossard finished with 7 points and 11 rebounds, and Elaun Sherwood scored 9 of her team-high 11 points in the third quarter.

    Napavine (14-3, 9-0 league) is at Mossyrock on Thursday.

Big Third Powers Pe Ell Past Panthers

    Pe Ell — The Panthers hung around in the first half, but a big Trojan third quarter propelled Pe Ell to a 69-33 win here Tuesday night Central 2B League girls hoops action.

    After taking a 7-point advantage into the intermission the Trojans came out in the third and outscored White Pass 31-7.

    The win ended a two-game skid for Pe Ell.

    “We hadn’t been putting together four good quarters and I told them at halftime to go out and work hard,” said Pe Ell coach Dawna Robinson. “I told Alissa (Brooks-Johnson) that if she didn’t go up with put-backs in next quarter she’d be running suicides.”

    Brooks-Johnson then came out and set the tone for the Trojans by grabbing a rebound and putting it back and getting fouled for a 3-point-play — and finishing the night with 8 points, a team-high nine rebounds and five steals.

    Sami-Jo Robinson then followed that up with two quick steals and break-away buckets to continue the Trojans’ run. Robinson had a team-high 18 points, eight steals and five assists.

    Pe Ell’s Christina Brooks scored 9 of her 16 points in the third by hitting 4 of 5 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer.

    “There were a lot of contributions from everybody,” said Robinson. “We worked together and played hard as a team and it was a really good confidence builder for us.”

     Mikel Elliott led the Panthers with 20 points, and Preslie Coleman chipped in with 9.

    Pe Ell (9-7, 4-5 league) will play at Adna on Thursday at 7 p.m., while White Pass will host Wahkiakum on the same night and time.
