Riffe Lake to Host Youth Bass Fishing Challenge in June

Anglers from several high schools across the state of Washington will descend on Riffe Lake June 14 for the Riffe Lake High School Bass Team Challenge.

The event is open to all high school students. Entry to the tournament itself is $50 per team, with each student also required to become a Student Angler Federation member; that costs $25.

Washington State Bass Federation Youth Director David Bruggman said the group is holding the event at Riffe Lake to give students in the southern areas of Washington state a chance to compete.

“We’ve always had our events on the east side or the north end, and we wanted to help out the south a bit,” Bruggman said.

Ten teams competed the federation’s state championship held at Moses Lake in 2013, and Bruggman said he expects a similar number of teams at Riffe for the Bass Team Challenge this year.

“We’re growing slowly,” Bruggman said. “It’s only our third year doing this.”

Teams are encouraged to make reservations for camping early. The tournament will begin at the boat launch at Taidnapam Park, 117 Cayuse Lane in Glenoma. Camping is available at the Taidnapam campground or the Mossyrock campground.

Check-in and registration are slated for June 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Taidnapam boat launch. Tournament officials will inspect boats at registration, and a mandatory meeting with rules and the tournament draw will follow immediately.
