Prep Baseball: Hawkins' Big Game Helps Bearcats Snap Losing Streak

Posted

W.F. West got a big performance from freshman Dakota Hawkins and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-5 nonleague win over Olympia Thursday in Chehalis.

Hawkins pitched the first six innings, allowing five hits and a run with seven strikeouts and one walk.

“He definitely threw well,” W.F. West coach Bryan Bullock said. “I think the last two games, we’ve gotten pretty good pitching and our defense has started to play better.”

Hawkins added a pair of RBI doubles at the plate, and Michael Rose notched two hits for W.F. West as well.

Brandon Davis hit a 2-out RBI single in the first inning which, coupled with an Olympia error, led to a 4-0 advantage for the hosts.

“It’s a lot easier to pitch and play when you jump out to a 4-0 lead,” Bullock said.

W.F. West (6-8) is slated to play a nonleague game at 3A Fort Vancouver on Friday.

Youckton Pitches Oakville Past Naselle

OAKVILLE — Alex Youckton was solid on the mound, and Oakville held off Naselle in a 5-3 independent 1B baseball contest here Thursday night.

Youckton worked all seven innings, striking out 11 with six hits and three walks. He helped his own cause at the plate, hitting a 3-run double off the fence in left-center field in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and finishing with 4 RBIs.

“He threw really well,” Oakville coach Marvin Youckton said. “One inning he had trouble with his locations, but he bounced back.”

Ray Lopez went 2 for 4 with a double for Oakville, and Sean Adams and Gary Ortivez were each 1 for 1.

“Both sides played a really good game. It was a good defensive game,” Youckton said. “The condition of the field wasn’t all that great, but both teams played really good defense.”

Cole Bergeson had two hits for Naselle.

Oakville (8-0) will host Twin Valley in a doubleheader on Monday, and will play at Naselle on Tuesday.
