2B Boys: Pe Ell Tops Raymond; Tigers Fall to Scapoose

    PE ELL — The Trojans jumped out to a 23-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they rolled to a 81-34 win over Raymond here Monday night in nonleague boys hoops action.

    “We came out pretty slow, but then we got in a good groove at the end of the (first) quarter,” said Pe Ell coach Clayborn Lusk.

    Pe Ell opened the second half by outscoring the Seagulls 29-11 in the third quarter then held Raymond to just 3 fourth-quarter points.

    Joey Vetter scored a game-high 17 points while also grabbing 7 rebounds and Lerry Tolliver finished with 11 points — all scored in the first half.

    “We set him up on some pretty nice looks and he finished,” said Lusk of the 6-foot-2 senior.

    Dylan Toelpelt finished the evening with a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Tanner Lusk grabbed 10 boards.

    “Dylan played solid and he is like a magnet for the ball anytime a shot goes up,” said Lusk. “He also finished real well tonight.”

    As a team the Trojans dished out 23 assists, with Hank Robinson notching a game-high 15 dishes. Robinson also led the team in steals with five and Tyler Ratke chipped in with four steals.

    “I was pleased with our effort for the most part,” Lusk said. “We moved the ball real well tonight.”

    The Trojans (14-2, 6-2 league) will move back into Central 2B League play when they head to Randle to take on White Pass on Wednesday, with tipoff set for 7 p.m.



 

Free-Throws Hold Back Tigers

    NAPAVINE — Napavine’s nonleague boys hoops matchup with Scapoose, Ore., came right down to the line.

    The Tigers hit a dismal 4 of 15 in a 51-48 loss here Monday, giving away an otherwise well-played game — according to Napavine coach Rex Stanley — at the charity striple.

    “Actually, we executed our offense pretty well tonight, and we were getting to the free throw line, which is what we’re supposed to do,” Stanley said. “But those free throw attempts were turning into turnover, because we can’t convert them. In a 3-point game, there’s the difference.”

    Colton Brown scored 14 points and played a solid game, according to his coach. Micah Brown scored 9 and Trevor Brown added 8. The Tigers shot 19 of 45 (42 percent) from the floor, and led 29-22 at the intermission.

    “Our execution on offense was as good as it’s been all year,” Stanley pointed out. “We played hard, and if we could have just hit 50 percent from the line, we would have gotten the win.”

    Napavine (10-6, 5-3 Central 2B League) returns to action on Wednesday, when it entertains Toutle Lake.
