RAINIER — The host Mountaineers won both boys and girls sides of a track meet with Mossyrock, Rochester and Winlock here Tuesday, pulling past the Vikings in both divisions.

Rainier scored 99 on the boys side to Mossyrock’s 81, and 111 on the girls side to the Vikings’ 84. Rochester scored 46 and 41 on the boys and girls sides, respectively, while the Cardinals had 36 (boys) and 13 (girls).

“It was a good early season meet,” Mossyrock coach Kevin Wilson said. “We had a lot of people competing. It was nice to see the kids come out and perform the way they did tonight.”

Rudi Kaech and Christian Brown picked up a pair of first places for Mossyrock. Kaech won the 200 and long jump, while Brown was tops in the shot put and discus. Riley Alvord also picked up a win, in the high jump, for the Vikings.

“Rudi had a really good day,” Wilson said.

Collin Hornby took both hurdle events for Rochester, and Tim Rios won the 400 at 55.42 for the Warriors. The team also won the 4x400 with a time of 4:13.79.

“We’re starting to have some good performances today,” Warrior coach Tim Holman said. “We had better performances, in general, than we had on Saturday. We’re looking to take more people to state this year that we have been.”

Jet Lawrence and Josh Rose picked up Winlock’s only top places of the day. Lawrence won the 100-meter dash at 12.4 seconds, and the triple jump at 38 feet, 11.75 inches. Rose won the 1600 and 3200 at 4:53.28 and 10:49.79, respectively.

On the girls side, Rochester’s Lupe Vasquez won the 100 meter at a time of 14.24, Mossyrock’s Staci Jacobson won the 200 at 28.87 and triple jump at 30-01.75, and Warriors’ Kenna Fosnacht won the 800 and 1600.

“Kenna had the best day for us,” Holman said. “In the 1600, she beat a girl (Rainier’s Zoie Daniels) that placed in state last year.

“It was a really good performance for her to step up,” he added. “They were stride for stride the entire time and she pulled it out in the end.”

Brenna Bronson won the javelin at 96-10, to round out the Warriors’ top placers.

Loni Kaech won the 3200, Kasandra Hoksbergen took the 300 hurdles, Savanna Lawrence won the high jump by default, and Molly Cushman won the long jump to help the Viking girls to a second place finish.

The Lady Vikings won the 4x100 and 4x200, but Rochester took the 4x400.

Rochester goes to Kalama on April 8, while Mossyrock travels to Wahkiakum on the same day.
