2A Girls Tennis: Centralia Netters Blank Rival Bearcats

Posted

The Centralia Tigers got the best of the W.F. West Bearcats on every account, sweeping Chehalis 6-0 in Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis play at W.F. West on Friday.

It was a different outcome than the last time the two teams met, when the rivals played to a rare tie.

“Our team wanted to make sure we didn't tie again. I think the girls worked together as a team and won with an exclamation mark today,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “Both Hannah (Jeffries) and Sydney (Creel) were pulled out of doubles to use their singles skills to insure the win. They are both versatile players and really pulled through for the team.

The No. 1 singles match proved to be the most contested, with Jeffries defeating Payton Rothlin by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

"I thought that Payton did a nice job against a really good player," W.F. West coach Jack State said. "Hannah is one of those that has worked very hard to be a good player, but Payton played very intelligently to keep the ball in play and compete."

Creel defeated Rielee Flodin, 6-0, 6-0 and Arleth Ramirez defeated Erin Bluhm by the same scores to round out the singles matches.

“Arleth looked awesome,” Keahey said. “She played with such confidence and today her consistent ground strokes paid off.”

Jaycee Foster and Hayden Blaser defeated Kyla Richards and Isabel Vander Stoep, 6-3, 6-1 in the W.F. West duo's third match together.

“Jaycee and Hayden have always been strong together. Kyla and Isabel can really drill the ball, but I felt that Jaycee and Hayden responded well,” Keahey said. “Jaycee and Hayden certainly displayed their doubles skills today — great approach shots, great net play, and great movement. They are a tough team.”

Ryann Chamberlain and Mali Christian defeated Emma Lund and Hannah Cummings, 6-3, 6-3. Hannah Gunderson and Taviana Keahey swept May Davis and Danielle Dugo, 6-3, 6-3 in the final doubles match.

"We kind of let some opportunities get away from us," State said. "We can outhit most doubles teams, but there are certain things we have to do with consistency. All credit goes to Centralia's teams. I thought they all did a really nice job."

W.F. West (2-4-1 league, 5-5-1 overall) will host Tumwater on Monday. Centralia (4-2 league, 8-3 overall) will travel to Black Hills on the same day.
