1A Girls: Toledo Puts Away Montesano

TOLEDO — Stifling defense allowed the Indians to continue their SWW 1A League Evergreen Division unbeaten streak as they downed Montesano 54-31 here Tuesday night.

Toledo’s defense held the Bulldogs to just one double-digit scoring quarter.

The Indians picked a good night to ratchet up their defense, as uncharacteristic poor shooting could have easily made the game close. Toledo shot 12 of 62 from the field.

“Overall, I thought we did things adequetely,” said Mandie Olson. “Usually we shoot well from the outside, and defensively we did okay, except for that third quarter.”

Montesano scored 17 points in the third quarter after compiling just 10 in the first half. The Bulldogs hit four 3-pointers to start the second half, but didn’t hit another triple before or after that stint.

Toledo outscored Montesano 14-4 in the fourth quarter to earn its eighth league win of the season.

Nicole Ewers scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed six boards for the Indians, while Tiffany Tornow had 14 points and six assists.

“Ewers saved our bacon tonight,” said Olson. “She played great tonight. She just did a great job posting up and she did a good job of seeing what was available.”

Olson noted that Lacey Scott did an excellent job guarding Montesano’s, Brooke Rydman, who Olson called the quickest player in the league.

Rydman had 18 points when the teams met on Dec. 18, but the Bulldog guard was held just 8 on Tuesday.

Toledo (14-1, 8-0 league) travels to Rainier on Friday for a boys-girls doubleheader, with the girls starting at 5:45 p.m.

Ony Fumbles in Final Minutes, Falls to Rainier

ONALASKA — Turnovers late in the game killed the Loggers, as they fell to Rainier 48-46 here Tuesday night in SWW 1A League Evergreen Division girls basketball action.

Onalaska (12-4, 6-3 league) turned the ball over 21 times — including three times in the final 1 minute, 30 seconds of play.

“Rainier pressures you hard and they’re a good defensive club,” said Logger coach Doug Ashmore. “We have to get a shot every time down the floor and we just didn’t get shots off down the stretch.

Ashmore noted that poor free-throw shooting (11 of 22) cost his team the game on Tuesday evening, but that could have been said of either team — the Mountaineers were a dismal 10 of 24 from the charity stripe.

“To win tight ball games you have to hit free throws,” said Ashmore.

Kalie Ritchey scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Loggers, while Sarah Barnes chipped in with 11 points.

The game was tied at 18 heading into intermission, and Onalaska outscored Rainier 15-13 in the third to take a 32-30 lead. The Mountaineers then closed the game by outscoring Ony 17-13 in the final stanza.

The Loggers pounded the boards in Tuesday nights’s contest. Ony outrebounded Rainier 46-25 and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, as opposed to the Mountaineers’ six.

Freshman Autumn Durand grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for the Loggers, while Erin Wrzensinski pulled down seven.
