Posted

RAINIER — With leading scorer Tiffany Tornow sitting most of the game, Toledo’s Haley Hellem scored 15 points — including six free throws in the final two minutes — to help the Indians stay atop the SWW 1A League Evergreen Division with a 51-45 girls basketball win at Rainier here Friday night.

Hellem added eight rebounds and six steals, and Nicole Ewers had 9 points.

“It was a great win for us tonight,” Toledo coach Mandie Olson said. “(Tiffany) Tornow was in foul trouble for most of the game. She maybe played a quarter of the game.

“Haley Hellem did a fantastic job,” she added. “As a team, we were pretty stagnant first three quarters. We just didn’t do a great job of being aggressive to the basket.”

Brittany Hope had 5 points, six rebounds and six steals in the winning effort.

Kristin Schoenherr led the Mountaineers with 25 points.

“It’s a great win to come to Rainier,” Olson said. “They’re a good defensive team. They did a good job tonight. Kristin did everything for them tonight.”

Toledo (15-1, 10-0 league) plays at Tenino Tuesday.

Suter, Jacobo Lead Cards Over Spartans

WINLOCK — Courtney Suter and Julie Jacobo combined for 30 points in the Cardinals’ 51-14 rout of Forks here Friday night in Evergreen Division girls basketball.

Jacobo had a game-high 16, and Kayla Rakes and Jill Craft combined for 10 rebounds.

“We had a good first quarter,” said Cardinal coach Scott Ashmore, whose team outscored its opponent 13-3 in that frame. “We came out and played pretty good defense and got a bunch of good looks.

“The second quarter we struggled,” added the coach, whose team scored 6 to Forks’ 2 in that period. “We couldn’t hit anything and nothing was falling.”

But then came the third, where Winlock whipped the Spartans — outscoring them by 25.

“We put the pressure on and got a lot of steals and a lot of layups,” Ashmore said. “That was more points than we had in the first half. We took the wind out of them.”

Loggers Rout Beavers

TENINO — Onalaska scored 40 first-half points to the host Beavers’ 10, and kept it rolling in a 63-35 SWW 1A Evergreen girls basketball rout.

Hailey and Regan Givens scored 15 and 10, respectively, to lead the Loggers, and Becky Nutt had 10 rebounds.

“Onalaska came out fired up and they just stuck the pressure to us,” Beaver coach Wanda Blanksma said. “We coughed the ball up 24 times in the first half. There’s no ladder long enough to get out of the hole we dug.”

“Our press really hurt ‘em early on,” Logger coach Doug Ashmore said. “Our 1-3-1 was really good. We just made baskets — that was the key. We’d finish after we’d get a steal.”

Danielle Wall had a game-high 19 points for Tenino.

The Beavers (4-11, 3-7 league) host Toledo Tuesday.

Bulldogs Pummel Warriors

MONTESANO — The Bulldogs opened up a 34-10 lead at halftime over Rochester, and cruised to a 44-17 SWW 1A League Evergreen Division win here Friday night.

Danielle Ruege scored 11 of her team’s points, and Alexis Castaneto had a team-high eight rebounds.

“We did a much better job tonight I thought,” Warrior coach A.J. Easley said. “Shooting-wise, we shot a lot more shots than we normally do.

“The main thing was, we were just surprised with the open looks we were getting,” he added.

Rochester (0-15, 0-10 league) plays at Rainier Tuesday.
