2B Girls: Napavine Holds Down Wahkiakum, Completes Perfect C2BL Campaign

    CATHLAMET — The Tigers wrapped up an undefeated Central 2B League season with a 56-44 win over Wahkiakum here Tuesday night in girls basketball action.

    Elaun Sherwood led Napavine with 10 points, while Demi Sahlinger, Amy Goettelman and Ali Brossard chipped in 9 each.

    “It’s been a dogfight, to say the least,” Tiger coach Shane Schutz said. “This is big for us. That was one of our goals, to win the league championship. They’ve accomplished that, and now we start 0-0 tomorrow.”

    Napavine trailed by 4 after the first quarter, led by 1 at halftime, and won the third quarter 14-8 for a bit of breathing room.

    Goettelman did a nice job of attacking the hoop, Schutz said, and the team made adjustments after halftime to hold the Mules to just three offensive rebounds — after giving up 14 in the first half.

    Sahlinger led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.

    Napavine (12-0 league, 17-3 overall) starts District IV 2B Girls Basketball Tournament play next Thursday.

    Note: The Napavine JV also wrapped a noteworthy season, going 10-0 in league play and 19-1 overall.

Pirates Top White Pass in Regular Season Finale

    RANDLE — Adna won its third-straight Central 2B League contest here Tuesday night, taking down the Panthers 54-49 in both teams’ final regular season game.

    Taylor Hoke scored 19 and Taylor Beasley added 14 for the Pirates, who finish the season at 5-7 in C2BL play and will enter the District IV 2B Girls Basketball Tournament as the No. 6 seed.

    The Panthers led by 2 points going into the final frame, but were outscored 15-8 the rest of the way.

    “We just kind of ran out of gas in the fourth quarter,” White Pass coach Mike Elliott said. “You can’t do that.”

    Mikel Elliott led all scorers with 21 points, and Preslie Coleman added 16 points and nine rebounds for White Pass — which shot a dismal 4 of 11 from the foul stripe.



    The Panthers, finishing with a 1-11 league record, will play Columbia Valley League champion Morton on Friday, in Mossyrock, in a pigtail game. The winner advances to the District IV tournament, which starts next week.

    “I don’t think we can take them lightly,” Elliott said.

    Note: White Pass and Morton, coincidentally, will be combining in all athletic programs next season.

Ducks Fly Away from Mossyrock

    MOSSYROCK — Poor shooting by the Vikings in the third quarter allowed Toutle Lake to escape here with a 44-37 win here Tuesday night in Central 2B League girls play.

    The game was knotted at 21 at the intermission, but the Ducks outscored Mossyrock 11-5 in the third to build enough of a lead to hold on for the win.

    “The third quarter killed us,” said Mossyrock coach Gale Bridges, whose team was 2 of 10 shooting in the third. “On their end they had some misses but got the offensive rebounds and putbacks.”

    The Ducks shot 19 of 36 from the field on Tuesday and had scoring contributions from everyone who saw playing time.

    The Vikings were just 14 of 45 shooting on the night and were led by Staci Jacobson and Claire Swayze, who each scored 10.

    “It was senior night so it was a tough loss for the girls,” said Bridges.

    Mossyrock a No. 4 seed in the District IV 2B tournament and Bridges is hoping that his team will find their stride next week.

    “A new season starts on Monday and we’ll be ready,” said Bridges.
