Prep Boys Basketball - Grosshans, Trotter Lead Pirates Over Rainier

    ADNA — Before the Mountaineers knew what happened, Adna was up 14-0 and the rout was on.

    The Pirates shot 65 percent in the first half of a 63-39 nonleague win over Rainier here Wednesday night in boys basketball action.

    “It was one of those nights where things went our way,” Adna coach Casey Dotson said. “We came out, played good defense, got in the right spots and executed. It may have been our best all-around half of the year.”

    Nate Trotter scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked nine shots for the winners. Kyle Grosshans scored 20 on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, and Coulsen Kohler shot 7 of 11 from the floor for 15 points. The Pirates, for the game, shot 53 percent (27 of 51) and held a 37-19 advantage on the boards.

    “For a nonleague game late in the year, I thought we came out prepared,” said Dotson. “We kind of lost focus a little bit in the second half, but we had a comfortable lead the whole way through.”

    Grosshans and Tyler Dotson each had four assists for the Pirates (11-3, 4-2 Central 2B League), who play at rival Napavine on Friday.

Trojans Sail Past Mossyrock

    MOSSYROCK — The Vikings had four players score in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to slow down Pe Ell.

    The Trojans, led by 19 points from Dylan Toepelt, left Mossyrock with a 64-52 Central 2B League win here Tuesday night in boys basketball action.

    “We actually played them pretty tough,” Mossyrock coach Chad Mitchell said. “We were in the game the whole time.”

    The Viks trailed by 6 points with two minutes left with a chance to cut the Trojan lead to 3, Mitchell added, but couldn’t get over the hump.

    “Everybody played hard, and with a lot of heart,” Mitchell said. “We had a lot of chances to get right in it and get ahead, but we just had too many turnovers.”

    Mossyrock finished the contest with 21 miscues. Austin Anderson scored 13, Jonah Bradley chipped in 11 with eight rebounds and Jordan Bowman and Austin Knight each had 10.

    Hank Robinson added 18 points and Daniel Duncan scored 9 for Pe Ell.

    Mossyrock (5-9, 1-6 league) is at Adna Tuesday, while Pe Ell (12-2, 5-2 league) hosts Wahkiakum on Friday.



Tigers Fend Off Panthers

    RANDLE — The Tigers turned it on in the fourth quarter to wrap up a 48-39 Central 2B League boys hoops win over the host Panthers here Wednesday night.

    Reece Stanley scored 8 points and pulled down 14 rebounds — eight on the offensive end — for Napavine.

    “He just kind of dominated the game down in the paint,” White Pass coach Tony Gillispie said. “When you’re giving your team that many extra chances, they’re going to hit some shots once in a while.”

    The Panthers took the lead in the third quarter, but Napavine scored the last 6 of the third frame and won the fourth 14-8 for the win.

    “We had a ton of turnovers there, again,” Gillispie said. “Our inability to score and make plays cost us. Napavine made more plays than we did.”

    Jordan Brown led Napavine with 10 points, while Trevor Brown added 8. Cameron Sume scored all of his game-high 12 points in the second half for White Pass.

    The Panthers (2-5 league, 4-10 overall) turned the ball over 23 times, compared with just 13 for Napavine (10-4, 5-2 league).

    White Pass is at Toutle Lake, while Napavine hosts Adna, on Friday.

Huskies Crash Boards, Top Seton Catholic

    VANCOUVER — Morton led 40-15 at halftime and waltzed to a 77-31 Columbia Valley League boys basketball win over Seton Catholic here Wednesday night.

    Kody Crowder scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Spencer Cheney chipped in with 12 points and 12 boards.

    “We rebounded well, forced some turnovers and took advantage of our size inside,” Morton coach Josh Brooks said.

    Kalen Dunlap came off the bench to score 12 points and dish out a couple assists, Brooks added. The Huskies picked up 53 total rebounds in the contest, while shooting 45 percent (33 of 73) from the floor.

    Morton (10-4, 5-2 league) heads to Federal Way on Saturday to play Christian Faith.
