2A Tennis: All Three Locals Still in Trophy Contention at State Tennis Tournament

SEATTLE — All three Twin Cities entries suffered a loss on Friday, but they’re all still alive here at the State 2A tennis tournament at the University of Washington.

W.F. West’s Sydney Cameron lost a tough 7-5, 6-3 first round match against Olympic’s Marissa Nemeth, but bounced back to beat Sammamish’s Sidney Lank in two sets a loser-out consolation match.

Cameron will play North Kitsap’s Anna Bronchal at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the fifth-place contest.

“Looking at tomorrow, the girl she plays is the teammate of the three-time state champion (North Kitsap’s Danya Walls), so she’s getting some good practice every day,” Bearcat coach Jack State said. “But I like Sydney’s chances.”

In doubles action, meanwhile, the Bearcats’ Megan Wilks and Mya Davis beat Pullman’s Sierra Robinson and Madison Shearer, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round, but came up short, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round against Sequim’s Kali Wiker and Jessica Dietzman.

The Bearcat duo will play a rematch of the District 4 semifinals against Washougal’s Beyonce Bea and Rebecca Boylan on Saturday morning, at about 9:30 a.m. The winner moves on to the fourth-place match.

The Sequim squad, State said, was a tough opponent that took advantage of its early chances.

“We were hitting some really good shots, and they would find a way to dig it out,” State said.

Centralia’s Rachel Wilkerson, Carissa Kaut lost to Kingston’s Emily Shaleen and Lily Beaulieu, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round, then beat Sehome’s Kyrene Eddy and Haley Wilson in a loser-out second-round match in two sets. Kaut and Wilkerson will face Kalli Willett and Allison Manion, of East Valley (Yakima), in a consolation match on Saturday, with a spot in the fifth-place match on the line.

In the 1B/2B/1A girls tournament, in Yakima, Tenino’s Kaylee Schow and Ally Vestal lost to Overlake’s Amanda Lin and Maria Russinovich, 6-1, 6-1 in their state opener. Vestal and Schow, however, bounced back to beat Chelan’s Sierra Rothlisberger and Madeline Peebles in two sets, but were then eliminated in two sets by Cascade’s Maddie Vandel and Megan Evans.
