2A Boys Wrestling: Bearcats Scratch Out Six Pins in Win Over Centralia

W.F. West left little in the way of doubt on Tuesday as they dismantled their rivals from Centralia, 51-14, in an Evergreen 2A Conference dual meet in Chehalis.

The Bearcats posted six pins on the night, beginning with their first match when Bo Davis flat-backed Trenton Kohl in the first round of their 126-pound affair. Fellow Bearcat Caleb Walters followed that opening win up with a thrilling 1-0 win over Eddie Matias at 132 pounds.

“That second match right there was probably the biggest win. Eddie’s awesome. He’s been around forever and we love him but we want to beat him,” said W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich. “That was a big win for Caleb and a tough ride out. That one could have gone either way.”

The Bearcats picked up pins by Bryce Laufenberg at 152 pounds and Evan Moon at 160 pounds, bot of which came 5:01 into their matches. Isaac Reavis earned another pin for W.F. West at 195 pounds and Bryson Boyd notched another pin for the Bearcats in the first round of his heavyweight bout.

Daniel Matagi of W.F. West earned a 1-0 win over Autin Lucht in their 220 pound match. In the 182-pound match Brock Guyette hung on for a 10-8 win over Cameron Blankenship. After sustaining an arm injury, Blankenship appeared on the verge of checking out due to injury but then stormed back with nothing to lose and nearly completed the comeback before time expired.

“We told Brock to just keep grinding. That kid’s a good athlete and he’s physical,” said Rakevich.

Centralia performed particularly well on the bottom half of their weight classes. Juan gaspar defeated Cristo Parriott 7-2 at 120 pounds by utilizing his bottle rocket speed on the mat. Using a similar style, Dominic Hicks-Avron was able to notch a pin in the first round of his 106 pound heat.

Alex Hicks-Avron posted the first win of the evening for Centralia when he defeated Zach Evans 6-2 at 138 pounds and Justin Lake followed that win up with a 6-4 decision over Darren Gray in overtime. Caleb Hylton also picked up a win for the Tigers when he notched a dominating tech fall in his 170 pound match.

“I thought the Centralia kids, if you weren’t looking at the scoreboard, they competed all the way through,” said Rakevich. “It got a little lopsided there with the pins at the end but they’ve got some good athletes who were fighting.”

W.F. West will host the Chehalis Invitational on Saturday, with Centralia also in attendance.
