Thurston County to Celebrate National Adoption Day

Posted

Thurston County will celebrate National Adoption Day for the 13th year. The county Family and Juvenile Court is holding an event starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, at Thurston County Family and Juvenile Court at 2801 32nd Ave. SW, Tumwater.

Lewis County will hold a similar event on Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Lewis County Law and Justice Center.

The events will celebrate the families who adopt and help raise awareness to the 2,000 legally free children in the state foster system still waiting for a forever family.

Judges, government agencies, lawyers, individuals, families and programs have come together to commemorate the day. The highlight of the event will be several local families publicly finalizing their adoptions. The event will also include refreshments and a reception. Children will be able to participate in activities including Booker T. Bear and craft projects from the Hands on Children’s Museum.

National Adoption Day is celebrated across the country. Since 2004, more than 1,000 children have been adopted by stepparents, domestic partners, individuals and couples in Thurston County.

This event is sponsored by Thurston County Superior Court, Family and Juvenile Court, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services — Children’s Administration, Thurston County Bar Association, and many local area businesses.
