The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office has announced an 18-hour citizen academy scheduled to begin next month.
“The goal of this academy is to promote understanding between the residents and deputies regarding their respective needs and problems,” according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office. “By promoting this relationship it is hoped that citizens and law enforcement officers can work together to make the entire community a safer place to live and work.”
The program is scheduled to take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, 19, 24 and 26 and Nov. 7 and 9.
A group of 25 people will be selected through a lottery for the free program. Each participant must pass a background check, be at least 18 years old and live in Thurston County.

The deadline for applications is Oct. 1. Selected participants will be notified by email the week of Oct. 9.
Topics for the academy include meeting Sheriff John Snaza, patrol responses, investigation and evidence collection, SWAT, dive and K9 demonstrations, firearms simulation training, use of force training, criminal law briefing, a jail tour, a question and answer session and volunteer opportunities.
