Program Seeks New Volunteers to Help Continue Assisting Senior Citizens With Taxes

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program in Thurston and Lewis County is looking for volunteers to help seniors fill out their tax returns.

During April, several locations throughout Lewis County will host a free tax assistance event where trained volunteers will help seniors complete their taxes online. The first orientation will be in December, as will two of the seven training days. The other five days will be in January after the holidays. Then, the time commitment is one four-hour shift during the 10 days of the program.

“There is a need in Lewis County,” District Coordinator for the Foundation Kirsten Klein told The Chronicle. “About a third of the people we see are vets.”

In recent years, Klein said she has had to shut down clinics in Salkum and Rochester because of the lack of volunteers. Her long-time volunteers have stepped up to fill in the gaps, but they could use a break, she said. They also travel to Morton for a day to have a clinic for the people in East Lewis County. Other locations are at the Twin Cities Senior Center and both the Centralia and Chehalis libraries
