A Vancouver man died Thursday while paragliding off Dog Mountain after his parachute became tangled and collapsed, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

At 7:45 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to the 700 block of Champion Hall Road after receiving a report of the incident.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, two paragliders — a 68-year-old man from Vancouver, Washington, and a 71-year-old man from Beaverton, Oregon — were paragliding together off Dog Mountain. The men reportedly got too close and their parachutes became tangled.

The Vancouver man’s parachute reportedly collapsed, causing him to fall to the ground at a high rate of speed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Beaverton man’s chute partially closed, but slowed his fall enough that he was only injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

He was transported to an area hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Dog Mountain, located on the west slopes of the Cascades outside Morton, is a popular destination for paragliders.
