The Olympia Mountaineers will start 2018 swiftly as they are set to gather twice in the first week of the New Year. On Jan. 3, the club will host a viewing of an adventure documentary in Olympia, and then on Jan. 3, the club will hold an informative meeting at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

The documentary, titled “Maxine Dunkleman and Ray Philen: Bicycling through Korea,” shares stories and images from the duo’s 2017 bicycle trek through South Korea. That journey covered lands from the North Korean border to Busan in the far south.

The viewing will be held at the Olympia Mountaineers’ Friends Meeting House at 3201 Boston Harbor Road NE, Olympia.

Doors are set to open at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Visitors will also be able to investigate the Mountaineer library and find information about club-taught courses and activities. The documentary and associated speakers are slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The next day, the Olympia Mountaineers will gather at Saint Martin’s University for a public gathering intended to groom prospective adventurers to join the far flung fray. The club includes climbers from Lewis County as well as Thurston County.

“Are you dreaming of getting outside this year? Learn how the Olympia Mountaineers can help you realize your ambitions,” read a press release from the Olympia Mountaineers.

“Representatives from Mountaineers courses and activities will set up information tables for attendees to check out.”

The press release noted that activities and courses covered by the Olympia Mountaineers include hiking and backpacking, scrambling, climbing, sea kayaking, wilderness skills, conservation, family hikes and activities, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, leadership, First Aid and navigation.

That free event is scheduled to run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Worthington Center on the Saint Martin’s University campus, located at 5300 Pacific Ave. SE, Lacey.
