Investigators are eyeing a malfunctioning accelerator as a possible cause of a van crashing into a building Wednesday afternoon in Chehalis.
Neither of the van’s two occupants were seriously injured, Chehalis Police Chief Glenn Schaffer told The Chronicle.
Police received a report of the gray Chrysler minivan crashing into the building at the corner of Park and Pacific avenues at around 4 p.m.
Witnesses reported the vehicle was driving on Pacific Avenue when it failed to negotiate a turn, hit several small trees and a stop sign and plowed into the building without stopping, Schaffer said.
Witnesses also reported the vehicle’s engine was revving and wheels were spinning after the crash, he said.
Schaffer said investigators believe the vehicle’s gas pedal stuck or something heavy fell on it.
The building was occupied by Jorgensen Timber, LLC.
City of Chehalis building and public works officials were contacted after the incident to inspect the building, clear away damaged trees and replace a street sign.
This is the second time in a week a vehicle has crashed into a Twin Cities building.
At about 1 a.m. Saturday, a driver hit the HUBBUB storefront on Tower Avenue in Centralia. The driver was seriously injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
