National Forest Begins Issuing Christmas Tree Permits

Posted

On Wednesday, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest began issuing personal-use tree-cutting permits for Forest Service lands.

The permits, which are $5 apiece, allow holders to cut trees at designated areas. Maps showing cutting areas are included with the permits, which may be purchased at Gifford Pinchot National Forest offices, including the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District in Randle.

Permits will also be sold at vendor locations, which include Blanton’s Market in Packwood and Randle One Stop and Fischer’s Market in Randle. All Forest Service locations will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Each household is limited to five permits, which may be used one time only. Households with fourth graders can get a free permit if they have obtained their Every Kid in a Park pass online.

Forest Service officials note that tree harvesters should be prepared for winter conditions and be aware that most roads are not maintained for winter driving. It is recommended to bring traction devices and a shovel, extra food and water, winter clothing, blankets, a flashlight and a first aid kit. Visitors should also let a friend or family member know where they’re going and plan to leave the woods before dark.
