Mineral School Residency Deadline Fast Approaching

Posted

Time is running short for writers and other artists to submit their applications for the Mineral School’s summer artist residency program. Artists have until midnight Monday to apply for one of only 16 available spaces.

Fifteen writers and one visual artist will be accepted to participate in one of four two-week residency periods in the old converted 1947 schoolhouse.

Residents will be provided all meals and otherwise left to their own devices in order to free them from the distractions of everyday life.

The four residency periods will run June 12-26, July 17-31, Aug. 14-28 and Sept. 11-25. Applicants accepted into the residency program will be notified at least two months prior to their selected retreat.

During each session, assorted residency alumnae return in order to speak with and collaborate with the new artists. Alumnae already confirmed to return for the summer of 2016 include poets Jane Wong and Michelle Penaloza (June), fiction writer Kirsten Lunstrum and Deepa Bhandaru (July), young adult authors Stephanie Kuehnertand and Carly Anne West (August), and nonfiction nature writer Wendy Call (September).

The cost to attend one of the two-week residencies is $400 per person. However, five funded residencies, or fellowships, will also be offered to qualifying artists.

The Mineral School is located just a 20-minutes drive from Mount Rainier National Park. Applications can be submitted on the Mineral School website at:  https://mineralschool.submittable.com/submit. Additional queries can be posed by phone call at (360) 496-0368 or by mail at Mineral School, PO Box 214, Mineral, WA 98355.
