The Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) awarded Morton General Hospital (MGH) the 2017 Community Health Leadership Silver Award for its innovative approach in meeting the health needs of area residents through the Mind, Body, Spirit: Self-Care Groups. The program, facilitated by Community Outreach Program Manager Diane Hurley, R.N., M.A., is designed to supplement the care available in the medical clinics and hospital.

“The doctors often have their hands full tending to the diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s symptoms,” Hurley explained. “The self-care groups are a place to remember that we are more than our symptoms and diseases, more than just our bodies and to discover the wisdom we all have within.” She went on to add that she sees a variety of people attending the group meetings with different religious traditions and beliefs as well as a mix of health challenges. “We don’t focus on the different physical or emotional problems that people have; although people may share that. Rather, we invite everyone to explore what is getting in the way of what they want and offer hope that they can make it different.”

MGH CEO Leianne Everett said it is a real honor to be selected for this Community Health Leadership Award as it recognizes MGH’s work to serve its community’s broader health needs in innovative and lasting ways. “We are proud of this as well as our other outreach programs on Diabetes Wellness and Aging Mastery,” she said.

The Mind, Body, Spirit: Self-Care Groups are currently being held the first and third Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at Morton General Hospital and the first and third Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. in Mossyrock at the MGH Community Outreach Center.
