Lewis County Coroner’s Office: Stay Hydrated in Hot Weather

The Lewis County Coroner’s Office is urging area residents to stay hydrated and seek out cool locations during this week’s heat wave.

“(T)he extreme heat we are expecting over the next few days can be dangerous, especially to the more vulnerable members of our community, the elderly and the young,” according to a statement from the Coroner’s Office. “Please check on your elderly neighbors and family members.”

Area residents should avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun and drink more water or drinks with added electrolytes than normal.

Carbonated or alcoholic drinks should not be used for hydration purposes, according to the Coroner’s Office.

Health risks associated with the heat could include heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, rapid pulse, fatigue and cool or moist skin. People with these symptoms should get into shade, sit or lie down and hydrate with fluids, according to a release from the Coroner’s Office.

Symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, nausea and vomiting and hot and dry skin.

“This is a true medical emergency that can lead to death if not treated immediately,” according to the release. “Call 911.”

Cooling stations have been set up at the Centralia City Hall and Lewis County Fire District 6’s Jackson Highway station.

Area residents can also seek out cool shelter in libraries and other public buildings during the hottest part of the day, according to the release.
