Lewis County Community Conversations to Show Films on Climate Change

A pair of documentary style films will be shown at First United Methodist Church in Centralia on Thursday as part of the ongoing Lewis County Conversations series. Both films take a look at the current realities, and anticipated future, of climate change.

The first film, titled “Safe Passage,” features Bradley Whitford, who starred in the television political drama “West Wing.” In “Safe Passage,” Whitford travels to the real Washington, D.C., in order to talk to Republican members of Congress about climate change and what they are doing to buffer against it. The film includes details on the work of the Citizens Climate Lobby, including footage from their 2016 international conference, which Whitford attended as part of what has been billed as his “transformative process.”

“Facing the Surge” takes place in Norfolk, Virginia, home of the largest naval base in the United States. The film documents how thousands of patriotic Americans are already fighting against rising tides in an effort to adapt to the realities of climate change. According to a press release, “Facing the Surge is not a film about loss and inaction. It tells the stories of citizens from across the United States as they step forward to raise awareness and push their government to solve climate change.”

The program is being sponsored by Fire Mountain Chapter Fellowship of Reconciliation and Veterans for Peace Rachel Corrie Chapter 109, as well as the Citizens for Climate Lobby.

The next Lewis County Community Conversations film presentations will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the First United Methodist Church, 501 S. Washington Ave., Centralia.
