Legal Aid Starts Fundraising Efforts with Pitch to Supporters

After the loss of its longtime United Way grant, Lewis County Bar Legal Aid is telling supporters it needs help to keep its doors open.

“Legal Aid must raise the money necessary to stay solvent or close its doors,” the organization said in a letter sent to supporters. “We are asking for your help.”

The nonprofit helps connect people who can’t afford an attorney with the legal help they need. A United Way grant of about $15,000 had provided a substantial percent of its funding, which covers two staffers and general expenses. Amid budget shortfalls, United Way did not provide the grant this year.

“Legal Aid’s expenses are mostly fixed: rent, office equipment and supplies, and staff wages,” the letter reads. “It could lay off its staff, but then no one would be there to provide legal services.”

The organization is looking to raise $25,000 by the end of the year and asks for donations and fundraising volunteers, as well as new board members. Those interested in getting involved can contact executive director Carolyn Hipps at 360-748-9884.
