Hawk Heads

A Centralia barber shop is helping diehard Seattle Seahawks fans show their support as the team prepares for a trip to the Super Bowl.

Mary Ventura, a hairstylist at Jae’s Barber Shop, estimates she has cut the Seahawks logo into more than 50 fans’ hair during the team’s playoff run this past month.

Ventura put a sign out in front of her business earlier this month to advertise the Seahawks-inspired hair cuts. Clients then started spreading the word.

“One kid tells another kid, grown-ups too,” Ventura said.

The majority of customers looking for the Seahawks cut are children, Ventura said, but about 10 out of the 50 so far have been adult men.

“There are some people that would never do it except now,” Ventura said.

Ventura uses a paper stencil of the Seahawks logo and presses it against the side of a client’s head. With a steady hand, she follows the stencil with an electric razor. The haircut takes about 20 minutes.

“Don’t make a solid line unless you are sure,” she said.

Other barber shops and salons around Lewis County are starting to see a similar trend.

A hair stylist at Great Clips in Chehalis said a couple people a day want the numbers of their favorite Seahawks players shaved into their heads. The trend started with the first playoff game, according to the stylists.

Hair Masters in Centralia saw one person request the number 12 shaven in the back of their head to honor the 12th Man, the term used for Seattle Seahawks fans, known for being the loudest in the NFL.

Kathy Bell, co-owner of Cut Loose Salon in Centralia, said she has not had any requests for Seahawks hair cuts, but welcomes any fans any time. A 12th Man Flag is posted on the salon.

“We used to do all those stripes and colors and numbers and now it’s getting popular again,” Bell said.

At Jae’s Barber Shop, Ventura has a book full of other designs she can stencil on people. Sometimes she can do designs by her own hand, she said.

Jae’s Barber Shop has been open for nine years in Centralia and operates 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

“A lot of kids come in for Angry Birds, Spider Man and Transformers,” Ventura said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ventura’s 5-year-old son Joseph came in after school for a Seahawks cut.

Joseph got the haircut to show off his support and express his individuality.

“My dad loves the 49ers,” he said.

While Ventura was finishing her son’s haircut Tuesday afternoon, another walk-in customer came through the door wanting a Seahawks cut.

Matt Amoroso, Winlock, brought in his 8-year-old son Cameron for the popular haircut. Amoroso said he heard about Jae’s Barber shop from a friend and decided to make the trip from Winlock.

“This guy I went to school with, all of his kids got it done,” Amoroso said.
