GED Testing Service Lowers Passing Score

GED Testing Service has lowered the passing rate for its high school equivalency exam, opening the chance to earn credentials for students who may not have been able to succeed otherwise.

Jim Swan, a certified instructor at the Chehalis-based GRAVITY High School, told attendees at the Centralia-Chehalis Chamber luncheon on Monday afternoon that the passing score was lowered from 150 to 145 in the four GED test subjects. Subjects include reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science and social studies.

An analysis was conducted to see what the passing threshold should be, and the study showed that the 150 score mark was too high in comparison to a high school diploma, Swan said.

The change is effective March 1, although it’s retroactive to Jan. 1, 2014, he said.

Students who were unable to secure the 150 points previously and scored above 145 will be getting notification that they have passed the test.

Swan said now is a great time for students to get their GED. To enroll in classes to obtain a GED at GRAVITY High School, call (360) 748-4441 or visit the school at 135 Prindle St. in Chehalis.
