Optimists to Hold Motorcycle Ride
The Chehalis-Centralia Optimists will be having its eighth annual End of Summer Motorcycle Ride Saturday.
The event offers a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. and a lunch at 1 p.m. or whenever motorcyclists return. Both are at Centralia Christian School, 1315 S. Tower Ave., Centralia.
Kickstands go up at 10 a.m. Registration is $25 for single riders and $15 for fender fluff. For nonregistered riders, the lunch is $10.
The ride is a fundraiser for scholarship funds, childhood cancer research, sports activities and sponsorship of community events.
For more information, call 360-388-7199, 360-669-3386 or visit Chehalis-Centralia Optimists on Facebook.
Former Park Ranger to Speak at Library
Former national park ranger Russell Cahill will be talking about the National Park Service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chehalis Timberland Library.
The origin of America’s parks goes all the way back to the Civil War and beyond. Cahill thinks it started when a single tree was cut down in California in 1852.
Cahill was a ranger during the 1960s and 1970s, and has written about the origins of America’s parks and his adventures in Yosemite, Alaska, Washington, D.C., and Hawaii.
Cahill will be talking about rescues, forest fires, bears breaking into a five-star hotel and other happenings.
His book, “Tales from the Parks,” will be available for purchase and signing.
Writers Guild to Hold Conference at College
The Lewis County Writers Guild will be hosting the fifth annual Southwest Washington Writers Conference Saturday in the Walton Science Center on the Centralia College campus.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Simon Wood, the USA Today bestselling author of “The One That Got Away,” “Accidents Waiting to Happen” and “Paying the Piper.” His latest thriller is “Saving Grace.”
Other presenters will include Jordan Hartt, Clare Meeker and Midge Raymond, just to name a few of the instructors who will be teaching about such subjects as flash fiction, collaborative writing, story structure, publishing and more.
The conference has always donated proceeds to local nonprofits, but this is the first year proceeds will go to establish student scholarships at Centralia College.
Registration is open at http://southwestwashingtonwriters.com/. The cost is $90, or $100 at the door. The student rate is $72, with ID.
The Lewis County Writers Guild meets Fridays at the Station Coffee Bar & Bistro, 120 S. Tower Ave., Centralia. Social time starts at 5 p.m., and the meeting begins about 5:30 p.m.
Lions Club to Collect Used Eyeglasses
On Saturday, the Centralia Lions Club will be collecting old eyeglasses 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at George Washington Park in downtown Centralia.
The Centralia Lions gather eyeglasses for the Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycle Center in Lacey. The glasses are processed for those around the world who have little or no eye care available.
The processing involves giving them a 190-degree bath, drying them and putting them under a scope to determine the prescription label. They are then stored for sharing with different mission trips from many groups within the community.
This new project of collecting the glasses at the park is an addition to the existing collection points in this area.
