Centralia Woman Pleads Guilty to Setting Fires at Apartment Complex

A Centralia woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to setting fires in November at an apartment complex she managed in an alleged attempt to get a resident to move.

Kathrin Turner, 44, pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree arson. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 10. Turner’s attorney, David Arcuri, and Lewis County Deputy Prosecutor Will Halstead plan to ask a judge on that date to impose a 21-month prison sentence.

Shellie Hernandez, who has identified herself as the tenant Turner was allegedly trying to move out, said she isn’t happy with the proposed sentence.

“I want more,” Hernandez said after Turner entered her guilty plea Wednesday. “She took a part of who I am with her lies and deception.”

Turner is out of custody and will remain free pending her sentencing hearing.

Turner was charged in December on suspicion of setting two fires, on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, at the apartment complex she managed in the 1000 block of Scammon Creek Road in Centralia. Neither fire caused serious damage to the building.

Police again responded to the apartment complex on Nov. 6 after receiving a report that Turner was missing.

The reporting person told police Turner’s office was locked and said they weren’t able to find her.

As police responded to the location, witnesses reported they found Turner in the bathroom of the office unconscious but breathing. She was bleeding from her arms and throat. Turner was seriously injured and spent several weeks in the hospital.

She originally told police she was attacked by an unknown man, but later admitted that she inflicted the wounds herself.

A Centralia Police Department investigation revealed alleged discrepancies in the complex’s books along with evidence that Turner was trying to get one resident to leave because she had already promised the apartment to another person.

One of the women who discovered Turner in the bathroom was trying to rent an apartment that she later learned was already occupied by Hernandez, according to police reports.

Hernandez told The Chronicle Wednesday she still lives in the complex.
