Centralia Teen Carson Hoel Acts as Page for Sen. Braun

Posted

Carson Hoel, 16, of Centralia recently spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the state Capitol.

He was one of 17 students who served as Senate pages for the first week of the 2020 legislative session.

Carson, a homeschooled tenth grader, was sponsored by Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, whose 20th District includes portions of Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, and Thurston counties.

The Senate page program provides an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working at the Legislature. Students transport documents between offices, as well as deliver messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“It’s been even better than I expected,” Carson said. “I really liked the mock committee we did for page school.”

Carson enjoys board games and video games, is the son of Ginnie and Michael Hoel of Centralia.
