A Chehalis man was booked into the Lewis County Jail after allegedly waving a firearm around, pointing it at passing cars and being combative with deputies.

James Paul Sauter, 51, Chehalis, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for first-degree assault after the incident on the 300 block of Highway 603.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to a report of a blond, shirtless man pointing a rifle at passing cars. The caller said he saw a man waving a gun in the air. He drove by a second time and the man pointed the rifle at him while standing on his porch.

Deputies found Sauter still standing on his porch. He started yelling at the deputies and “appeared to be preparing for a fight,” as he approached one of the them, according to the report.

One deputy pointed his Taser at Sauter and told him to stop and get on the ground. Sauter stopped, but didn’t drop. The deputies tried to take him down, but Sauter resisted until he was eventually handcuffed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found, and later obtained a search warrant for, a handgun, an assault rifle and ammunition found in Sauter’s vehicle.
