Gov. Chris Gregoire on Wednesday announced Chehalis as one of the recipients of the 2010 Smart Communities Awards, which recognizes creative and livable innovations made by communities in Washington.

Chehalis was recognized with the Smart Choice award for the implementation of the Chehalis Community Renaissance Team.

“The governor’s Smart Choice award is recognition of our vision and commitment to work with our community and business partners in charting a positive future for Chehalis and is greatly appreciated,” Mayor Anthony Ketchum said.

Formed about a year ago, the Renaissance team has published a walking tour guide of the city, formed a business consultation group for startups and nonprofits, formed a young professionals group, erected 32 wayfinding signs in the area, added new signs about Chehalis to Interstate 5, created a new logo and motto for the city, and planted trees near Louisiana Avenue.

It is currently working on startup of a museum for children, developing a business/research and development facility, planting and maintaining landscaping on Market Street, and building parking and retail structures in downtown.
