Editor's Best Bet: ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Coming to Fox Theatre

Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be showing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at 2 and 7 p.m. today at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.

Admission is $8 per person, $7 for members and $20 per family (three to four persons).

Holley’s Place Frozen Yogurt and the new Fox Theatre concession stand supply movie snacks, including popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, pretzels, drinks and more.

Sponsor of this screening is TwinStar Credit Union.

Winter Carnival Coming to White Pass Ski Area

With the help of some recent snowfall, the White Pass Ski Area will stage its 29th annual Winter Carnival this weekend.

In addition to a snow castle, also featured at the festival will be ski and snowboard events, live music, a poker run, fireworks and more in the base area. This year’s theme will be an homage to Dr. Seuss; costumes are encouraged. Base area events are free and open to the public.

The two-day Ski 4 Kids event is a ski/snowboard fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network. On Saturday, participants will train in gates and on Sunday they will have the opportunity to take on the race course. Kids must be chairlift riders to participate. It is appropriate for ages 5-12. Fundraiser Planned for Cancer Victim

North Fork Timber is hosting a fundraiser tonight for Christina Anderson, 41, the daughter of one of North Fork’s truck drivers, John Workman. Anderson has terminal cancer.

The adults-only event will be at 6 p.m. at the North Fork Timber shop, 258 Hamilton Road, Chehalis.

The $10 dinner will include Hawaiian chicken, baby back ribs, potato and macaroni salad, rice and drinks.

A silent auction will be part of the event. Among the items going up for bid will be two loads of gravel, delivered; goodie baskets; and a Stihl leaf blower. Also, there will be a 50/50 raffle.

Performance to Feature Sondheim Music

“The Songs of Sondheim in Concert” is coming to Morton’s Roxy Theater tonight.

The event is a celebration of the musical-theatre songwriting of Stephen Sondheim through the voices of Erin Bake, Bob McKenzie-Sullivan, Joseph Brassey, Catherine Brassey, Alan Newman, Paul Brassey and Fiona Thornton, accompanied by Nancy Dillard and directed by Paul Brassey.

Historian to Speak About Washington Railroads

Russell Holter, historian for the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, will tell the story of railroads in Washington 2-3:30 p.m. today at the Centralia Timberland Library.

Holter has spoken and written extensively on the impact of railroads in this region. He credits the coming of the rails with bringing many people to the region who helped shape the future of Washington state.

Holter is the author of “Rails to Paradise,” an acclaimed historical account of the Tacoma Eastern Railroad, and the soon to be released book “The Fatal Fourth.”

 All programs at Timberland libraries are free and open to the public.

Dinner, Auction to Raise Money for Wheelchair

A benefit dinner and auction for Brandin Spare will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Fords Prairie Grange, 2640 W. Reynolds Ave., Centralia.

Spare, 17, was involved in a one-car rollover accident on Reynolds Avenue, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. The purpose of the event is to raise money for an electric outdoor wheelchair for Spare.

A spaghetti dinner is $10 per plate for those age 11 and up; for $10 and under it is $5.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., there will be a live auction. Among the items up for auction are four tickets to a Mariners game, a three-day, two-night stay at Great Wolf Lodge and 4½ cords of delivered firewood.

Mormon Church to Help in Ancestry Search

The Centralia Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hosting Family Discovery Day 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the stake center, 2195 Jackson Highway, Chehalis.



People are invited to discover their ancestors and begin their family tree. Visitors are encouraged to bring a laptop or flash drive to save what they find.

Those who have hit a brick wall in their search for ancestors will receive assistance in overcoming roadblocks. The Family History Center can lend a hand in getting started or doing advanced searches with the many databases available.

Those in attendance will learn about genealogy research tools and techniques. Activities for young children will be provided.
