Brush Fire Destroys Barn in Scatter Creek Wildlife Area

A two-story barn in the state-owned Scatter Creek Wildlife Area north of Grand Mound was completely destroyed in a brush fire Sunday evening.

The brush fire burned two acres and threatened homes adjacent to the state property before being brought under control.

No injuries were reported from the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

West Thurston Fire Authority and the Washington Department of Natural Resources remain on scene this morning of the fire just north of Grand Mound on the 16000 block of Case Road Southwest.

Lanette Dyer, the West Thurston Fire Authority spokeswoman, said the fire was significant due to the fact that the area is a state preserve popular with horseback riders and pheasant hunters.

Additional crews from area fire departments were called in to assist West Thurston to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby Interstate 5.

“They weren’t taking any chances,” Dyer said.

West Thurston was assisted from East Olympia Fire District 6, Tenino Fire District 12, McLane/Black Lake Fire District 9, Griffin Fire District 13, Gibson Valley Fire District 16, Grays Harbor Fire District 1 and Grays Harbor Fire District 5.
