Spring Quarter Brings More Students to Centralia College

Despite looming state budget cuts and an almost certain tuition hike, local students continue to flock to Centralia College to receive their education.

Centralia College officials reported record enrollment year-over-year for the fourth straight quarter, as the first day of spring quarter classes brought 1,933 full-time students, or FTEs to campus — an increase of 15 from 2010 and 10 above the college’s target of 1,923. The preliminary numbers sit just below a total of 1,964 FTEs in winter quarter, itself 13 percent higher than the same time period for 2010.

“We’re seeing that even during this depressed economic time, students are continuing to find us the best choice for education where they might have chosen a four-year college otherwise,” said Qy-Ana Manning, director of enrollment services and registrar. “We’re strongly committed to serving our community and students as we go above and beyond what the state is supporting.”

The enrollment numbers at Centralia College are by no means final, as open registration extends through the end of this week. Students still have a chance to register for classes, although the window of classes open is shrinking. After Friday, students will only have the opportunity to sign up with faculty approval.

Manning said although the college faces a drastic budget cut — which could hit $2 million through the 2011-12 academic year — Centralia College remains on pace for record enrollment throughout the 2010-11 year.

Despite that cut and what college staff describe as a nearly inevitable tuition increase for students next year, Manning said the college is putting its best foot forward to meet students’ needs.

“I think the numbers speak to our successes in serving students and being a valuable resource for the community,” Manning said. “The economy is tough on everyone and it’s so good to see our staff focused on student achievement.”
