Chehalis Community Renaissance Team to Unveil Pedestrian Kiosks

The Chehalis Community Renaissance Team recently finished the first of six kiosks planned to be installed through the city this month.

The completed kiosk will be located at the Lewis County Historical Museum, and on May 26 at 11:30 a.m., the kiosk will be unveiled during the “100 years of Techology” celebration at the museum.

The other five kiosks will be located at Recreation Park, the Veterans Memorial Museum, the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library, the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum and near the corner of Market Boulevard and Boistfort Street.

The project, which included the installation of more than 50 wayfinding signs in 2010, was funded through a $60,000 distressed counties fund grant, $25,000 from the city’s tourism fund as a match for the grant and in-kind services from the city’s public works department.

The renaissance team plans to use the wayfinding signs and kiosks to guide visitors to the city’s attractions, parks, historic districts, walking trails and government offices.

The kiosks, constructed by Chehalis-Centralia Airport staff, will be double-sided. One side will have a map showing locations that are written on the wayfinding signs, while the other side will have a brief statement about each location.

Smartphone tags have been added for each location, and also for local dining, lodging and events.

The Chehalis Community Renaissance Team overlooks a 15 to 20-year citywide master plan to make Chehalis a more attractive place to live, enhance job opportunities, increase tourism and encourage local shopping.
